Most people agree on Angels. Yes, they exist. We see them represented in art, literature, and various religions throughout the ages. For many people they are part of everyday life.
Do we feel the same way about fairies? Probably not for most people. Fairies are fantasy relegated to children’s stories. Fun to think about, but not a part of our daily lives. At least not in our so called enlightened modern age.
This was not always so. There is a rich tradition of fairy and elf lore in many cultures. There was a time when fairies, elves, and other nature spirits were a part of life.
I’m no fairy historian, so I will not attempt of give you a chronicle of the hundreds of stories told in different cultures. It’s fascinating research and worth looking into.
I, however, do believe in fairies, elves, gnomes, etc. Why? Well, when I was very young my mother took me into the woods and told me stories. She showed me a particular plant. Digging up the plant revealed at the roots a tiny figure that resembled a pitcher.
“This is what the fairies use to drink from,” she told me. She never said that this was a made-up story. She told me of fairies and elves and their adventures in the same tone she told me of the history of her ancestors. I believed her.
Through the years I was always attracted to fairy lore and fairy art. I was thrilled when Brian Froud published his Fairies book of tales and images. So many of the images resonated with me. I loved buying calendars and journals with fairy illustrations. I have also accumulated jewelry and figurines. still do!
And now, many years later I believe even more. I’ve had a few encounters that strengthen that belief. Experiences that cannot be explained away. I hope to have even more encounters!
In the meantime, I use Fairy Oracle cards to stay linked to the Nature Spirits. Would you like to know what the Fairies have to say to you? I would love to guide you with Fairy Oracle readings. Until then, clap if you believe in Fairies!
